Practice Area Profile

BCG’s Energy practice helps companies navigate an increasingly complex business climate. The practice covers the Oil & Gas and Power & Utilities sectors. We also have deep knowledge in Energy transition and Sustainability, Energy Trading and Risk Management and Energy Engineering and Services. Our projects typically apply BCG’s core consulting skills in functional areas such as, digitalization, strategy, organisation or performance improvement, but in the distinctive environment of Energy.  We also address projects that touch upon more operational or technical challenges, which we deliver through our expert consultants, occasionally partnering with external specialists. We work with the senior leaders of leading international and national oil companies, service providers, utilities, regulators and financial institutions.

The Energy Practice has enjoyed rapid and sustained annual growth over several years, representing about 10% of BCG’s global business volume.Worldwide over 300 Partners, Principals and Project Leaders focus in the Energy space, supported by a large group of Energy experienced and trained Consultants and Analysts, many with pre-BCG industry experience.

Role Profile

As an Expert Project Leader affiliated to the Oil & Gas sector, you will be a core member of BCG’s Energy practice working alongside some of the world’s top minds in the industry. You will also significantly contribute to the development of our Decommissioning Business Line, and support its ambitious growth targets.

You will work on some of the most important E&P Decommissioning projects in the North Sea, Southeast Asia and Gulf of Mexico, partnering with Operators, Governments and Service Companies. The majority of your time will be spent leading and developing BCG Decom project teams composed of members of different backgrounds collaborating with you on those projects. You will also dedicate time to further develop and deepen BCG’s expertise in Decom and late life operations, and to support BCG Partners in business development initiatives.

What will be expected of you in this role is to:

  • Play a leading role in the growth of our Decommissioning Business Line through case execution, client development, and intellectual property & product creation
  • Execute, or provide expertise and support to, Decommissioning projects within the Oil & Gas sector for our key clients in the North Sea, Southeast Asia and Gulf of Mexico
  • Work jointly with BCG and client project teams, bringing expertise to the team and to the client on site
  • Provide intellectual leadership for the project teams by generating key ideas and conceptual frameworks to guide research and analysis
  • Actively support our business development efforts: client meetings, industry conferences
  • Contribute to the creation of BCG’s intellectual capital on the topic : position papers, studies, insights from case experience, tools and products
  • Dedicate time to develop own and BCG’s expertise – developing and driving the content agenda to the next level
  • Provide mentorship and support to consultants ensuring continuous individual development

In addition to your core focus on Decommissioning, you will also participate in projects related to other E&P topics such as late life operations and strategy, M&A and Post merger integration, Production optimization…

Depending on the skill set and previous experience of candidates, we are open to consider slightly more junior profiles on Consultant level who will work for a while as an individual contributor within BCG’s decommissioning or E&P project teams before developing into a Project Leader role.

Your Qualifications

  • At least 5-7 years of work experience gained either at a leading E&P operator, or at a NOC with mature portfolio, or at a leading Oilfield Service Company
    • Ideally in the “Project” or the “Operations” disciplines, and with a succession of roles showing clear progression in responsibilities
    • Previous experience in mature assets and in decommissioning is expected
    • Previous experience as a facilities engineer or site manager is a definite plus
  • Plus 3-5 years of leading consulting projects for a top level advisory or consulting firms, although candidates with exceptional industry backgrounds, an MBA and 1-3 years of previous consulting experience would also be considered
  • A track record of project/team leadership and related achievements
  • Willingness to travel internationally and to work remotely on client sites


  • Strong academics from a top-tier institution
  • An MBA is desirable but not essential

ECTs are a core pillar of the strategy of the Energy Practice, you would join our group of ECTs dedicated to Decommissioning, all of them having 7-10 of industry background, plus consulting experience prior to joining BCG. This team will personally ensure that your integration in BCG will be a success. The track enables individuals to bring significant value to BCG with significant operational or technical experience in a specific field, usually gained outside of BCG either in industry, academia or specialised consulting.
