Practice Area Profile

BCG’s Energy practice helps companies navigate an increasingly complex business climate. The practice covers the Oil & Gas and Power & Utilities sectors. We also have deep knowledge in Energy transition and Sustainability, Energy Trading and Risk Management and Energy Engineering and Services. Our projects typically apply BCG’s core consulting skills in functional areas such as, digitalization, strategy, organisation or performance improvement, but in the distinctive environment of Energy. We also address projects that touch upon more operational or technical challenges, which we deliver through our expert consultants, occasionally partnering with external specialists. We work with the senior leaders of leading international and national oil companies, service providers, utilities, regulators and financial institutions. The Energy Practice has enjoyed rapid and sustained annual growth over several years, representing about 10% of BCG’s global business volume.Worldwide over 300 Partners, Principals and Project Leaders focus in the Energy space, supported by a large group of Energy experienced and trained Consultants and Analysts, many with pre-BCG industry experience. We are well known for our long history of cutting-edge research and thought leadership. Consulting with BCG ensures you work on the biggest issues being tackled by senior management, with a wide variety of experiences across different clients, topics and geographies.

What You'll Do

A Project Leader has responsibility for the delivery of consulting projects, leading small but high impact teams of consultants to drive impact for our clients. Project Leaders are typically aligned to one or two Industry or Functional Practice Areas (though may also lead projects outside these Practice Areas on occasion).

Key responsibilities include:
  • Leading the day-to-day execution of consulting projects and ensuring successful delivery of client requirements within the scope of the engagement; including:
  • Owning the project planning and process management, and communicating progress to clients and BCG leadership
  • Driving development of the content, either directly or by providing guidance to the consulting team (for example, by sharing ideas, frameworks or providing input on research and analysis)
  • Managing the client relationship on a day-to-day basis
  • Managing project scope and maintaining an acceptable pace of work
  • Actively managing multiple client and stakeholder relationships
  • Leading senior client presentations and meetings
  • Providing apprenticeship and coaching to junior consultants to help develop their consulting skills, including sharing knowledge and experience, giving frequent feedback and creating opportunities for team members to learn and grow
  • Supporting and contributing to other BCG projects, for example by sharing expertise or best practices
  • Contributing to the development of intellectual property within the Practice Area(s), including improving methodologies, tools, techniques and developing new ideas and approaches
  • Contributing to business development efforts, including preparation of proposal documents and attending pitch presentations
  • Contributing to the running of the London office, which may include recruiting, training or other activities

What You'll Bring (Experience & Qualifications)

  • At least 7 years of work experience in top level advisory or consulting firms, though candidates with excellent industry backgrounds and 4-5 years of previous consulting experience would also be considered
  • A strong track record and a close network of professional contacts at key clients within the energy sector
  • Experience of working with/for well functioning, advanced and global businesses
  • 2-3 years leading/playing core role in driving projects - owning the project process, content and day-to-day client interactions
  • Experience of working within the Oil and Gas space, especially within oil upsteam
  • Experience running large programs, transforming business units e.g cost optimisation, digital strategy
  • Deep understanding of operations is required
  • Interested in deep experience in part of the oil value chain
  • A track record of project/team leadership and related achievements
  • Willingness to travel internationally and to work remotely on client sites
Education and Qualifications
  • Strong academics from a top-tier institution
  • An MBA is desirable but not essential
