Practice Area Profile

BCG’s Financial Institutions Practice Area (FIPA) aims to be the consultant of choice for leaders in the financial industry. We seek to achieve that goal by helping clients find their way amid the ever-evolving, ever-shifting competitive landscape. By focusing on the fundamental economics of their businesses and the underlying needs of their customers, we help banks, brokerages, asset managers and other financial- services organizations rethink their strategic assumptions, identify winning business propositions, and seize new opportunities in the expanding digital environment.

What You'll Do

The responsibilities will fall broadly into three areas:


Client Delivery (focus area)
  • Working jointly with BCG and high impact client project teams, bringing expertise to the team and to the client on site
  • Working independently at a module level on select topics
  • Support case teams, especially those with need for deep expertise and a hands-on approach
  • Contribute to the quality of the work, question results with sanity checks and with the project team
  • Educate and inform clients proactively about state of the art technologies, methodologies and tools and how it can bring value to their business and, in particular, operations
  • Lead role in presenting key findings to C-level executives

Topic and Practice Development

·        Contribution to improvement of methodology, tools, enablement material and topic development on areas of expertise

·        Develop and contribute to BCG's intellectual capital - working on BCG knowledge content projects to develop new techniques and/or capture new ideas as well as casework experience

·        Contribute to BCG Practice Area publications

 

Specific banking/financial institutions knowledge

·        Deep industry expertise in banking and financial institutions industry:

·    Deep knowledge of bank structure, bank profit and loss statement and balance sheet items

·    Understanding of various banking models including business strategy for retail and corporate clients (client’s segmentations, product offering for various clients segments, channels strategy, remote banking applications, digital banking) and operations (organizational-functional structure, front-, middle-, back-office set-up, business processes, KPIs, motivation system)

·    Knowledge of specific business areas: risk management, IT etc.

·    Experience in creating market revenue pools and volume model assessments

·    Experience and understanding of transactional banking, PMI, customer centric transformation, network optimization, processes optimization is definitely a plus

·        Well-developed consulting competences that result in top-down approach and problem solving skills. Strong analytical and financial modelling skills

·        Practical experience in strategy development and full/partial operationalization/ implementation

·        Strong root-cause analysis skills and ability to apply banking industry knowledge as above to the concrete client’s situation and find solutions for the particular business cases, prepare his/her thoughts in a persuasive way and being able to present it to C and C-1 level clients to prove his/her position

·        Knowledge of non-banking but related areas (telecom, digital, etc.) could become a good synergy mix

 

 

Additionally, the following is required on Project Leader level:

·        Ability to act as project manager and lead consulting teams for an entire case or at a module level on select topics

·        Ownership of project process, content and day-to-day client interactions

·        Supporting case teams, either as an individual contributor or as an advisor to the overall project

·        Ensuring the quality of the work, and the relevance of the synthesis and recommendations

·        Challenging and managing work in progress and results

·        Development of proposals from end to end around specific topics and participation in client proposals presentations

·        Contributing to the development of additional business beyond the delivery of recommendations on client engagements

What You'll Bring (Experience & Qualifications)

Education and Work Experience

·        Preferred advanced degree in Economics, Finance, and/or Business Administration. Other advanced degrees are accepted as well, e.g. Law, Mathematics, Physics

·        Strong academics from top-tier institutions (top 15% of class)

·        Work experience of 7+ years in banking/financial institutions and/or consulting with focus on banking/financial institutions. For Project Leaders, previous consulting experience is a must!
