What You'll Do

Utilities and the energy industry as a whole is undergoing a massive disruption as a result of distributed energy resources (DER). As renewable energy takes off and battery storage moves closer to consumption, power grids around the world are becoming more decentralized. The last few years has seen DER grow at double digit rates, with growth expected to continue in the future. Technology has advanced rapidly in areas such as rooftop solar, energy efficiency, smart home technologies, etc. Advances in battery storage, energy management systems (EMS) and other integrated solutions will fuel further growth in the DER market.

Our clients continue to face important questions about the impact of DER on their business, the energy landscape, and opportunities the growth of these technologies create. We are seeking a candidate to help support our clients and BCG case teams in managing this disruption and navigating future business models and opportunities in DER. In this role, you will navigate the wide spectrum of challenges and opportunities this creates for our diverse client base, including but not limited to:

  • Utilities: Supporting utilities to understand the impact of the growth of DER on utilities, ranging from impacts on the grid (e.g., smart grid, ‘grid-edge’ technologies, etc.), customer programs (e.g., energy efficiency, demand response, electric vehicles, etc.), and new unregulated growth opportunities
  • Pure-play DER players: Working with the developers, installers and other core players in the DER ecosystem on the variety of strategic, organizational, and functional issues they face
  • New entrants from technology, industrial goods, financial and other sectors: Evaluating business models, M&A, and other growth opportunities for new players entering the DER space.

What You'll Bring (Experience & Qualifications)

The ideal candidate will possess:

A mix of consulting and industry experience across utilities and DER players.

Strong content expertise and experience related to the impact of DER on utilities, including:

  • DER customer programs managed by utilities, e.g., Energy efficiency, demand side management, demand response, etc.
  • Clean transportation and electrification efforts of utilities
  • Tariff design and the impact of DER on rates, e.g., net energy metering, time-of-use pricing, etc.
  • Impact of DER on the distribution grid, challenges with integration of DER
  • Smart grid technology, including AMI and other ‘grid-edge’ technology
  • Future regulatory and revenue models, e.g., NY REV, CA DRP, etc.

Robust background and experience with DER players, and an understanding and experience with:

  • DER business model and the expected future evolution of those models
  • Key players, competitive landscape, key success factors, etc.
  • Customer behavior, segmentation and challenges with customer acquisition
  • Financing models for DER installations
  • Technical product understanding and expected evolution of new DER technologies
  • Organizational and capability requirements of being a player in the DER market
  • Regulatory landscape and incentives (ITC, PTC, other state-level regulation, etc.)
Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, or Washington, D.C. preferred, North America flexible
