Digital technologies are fundamentally reshaping both consumer demand and competitive dynamics at unprecedented rates within the consumer industry. BCG’s consumer practice helps clients respond to industry disruption by redefining their channel strategies, transforming their organizations, and seizing competitive advantage. The practice serves clients across four main sectors - Consumer Products, Retail, Travel & Tourism, and Fashion & Luxury - and each of the four sectors covers a range of sub-industries and functional topics.

What You'll Do

WHAT YOU’LL DO

BCG is looking for Retail Project Leader and Principal consultants who will partner with clients to take on their most difficult challenges, transform mindsets, reimagine businesses, and build capabilities that enable organizations to achieve sustainable advantage. The ideal candidate will be inquisitive, curious, and confident, with a penchant for going above and beyond immediate project requirements to find deep insights that others have missed. A genuine passion for problem-solving, combined with first-rate leadership and communication skills will be critical to success.

At BCG, we set our standard for value creation high, challenging ourselves to deliver tangible and positive change. Our work must provide next-level insights, change the mindset of our clients, and directly lead to clients taking action and executing their business in new ways.

Project Leaders direct work on client engagements, managing studies to define client needs and supervising research activities to obtain relevant data. Project Leaders oversee the formulation of hypotheses for research and investigation, and the advanced financial analysis of client, competitor, and industry data. They apply knowledge of business principles and industrial organization to the development of actionable recommendations for profitable growth, and supervise work including strategic due diligence, product development studies, change management plans, and the evaluation of long-term investment opportunities. Project Leaders are also responsible for managing client contact and play a key role in the development and maintenance of high-level client relationships.

Principals, as the senior person most frequently at the client site, will interact with the client lead on a day-to-day basis to ensure that expectations are aligned. Principals provide the project management oversight required to meet client expectations. Responsibilities may include the development of presentations, managing of external relationships and consultant work progress, providing status reports, and overseeing budgets.

Projects vary based on client needs, but the importance of seeing possibilities where other people find limits will be a constant. Principals go deep to unlock insight, challenge established thinking, drive transformation, improve performance, and deliver bottom-line impact.

WHO YOU’LL WORK WITH

BCG’s Boston office is where it all began. Today we remain at the forefront of innovative thinking in health care, financial services, industrial goods, consumer goods, retail, and high tech. We continue to focus on achieving real impact for our clients, which include a mix of leading and innovative local, regional, and global corporations and institutions. We are committed to BCG's strong tradition of social impact and community involvement. Our community service team is deeply involved in several local schools, youth programs, and shelters. In all of these ways, the Boston office reflects the city itself: rooted in rich history while constantly innovating and progressing to meet new opportunities.

In this Retail Project Leader or Principal role you will be in charge of leading teams to perform this work for our clients in traditional bricks and mortar retail, but also in e-commerce and multi-channel, as well as in emerging areas like Personalization and 1:1 marketing.

You’ll collaborate with BCG team members from many backgrounds and disciplines in a team-oriented, relationship-driven environment. Working alongside some of the world’s top minds on cases that reshape business, government and society, you will increase your understanding of complex business problems from diverse perspectives, and develop new skills. At the same time, you’ll partner with senior clients, taking on the role of trusted advisor, and work at all levels of the client organization to find and execute value creation strategies that result in meaningful, enduring impact.

YOU’LL BE BASED IN:

Boston, MA

What You'll Bring (Experience & Qualifications)

YOU BRING

Candidates for this role would ideally bring experience in consulting to retailers or a mix of consulting and retail industry experience.  Functional areas of focus could include:
  • Merchandising
  • Operations
  • Marketing
  • Supply Chain

Experience and skills should include:
  • 3 – 5+ years of post graduate consulting experience with 1+ years at a team lead level
  • Strong analytical skills and a high capacity for conceptual thinking. Ability to develop leading edge business models, frameworks for analysis, and long-term business strategies that maximize shareholder value. Must be able to thrive in a hypothesis-based environment where inductive rather than deductive reasoning is the norm.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage client engagements, client relationships, and provide “thought leadership” to teams, fully owning the responsibility for the quality of engagements.
  • A combination of managing teams and “hands on” delivery experience is critical. Principals supervise junior consultants as engagements are executed, but must be prepared to roll up their sleeves and get directly involved as well.
  • A solid track record of building strong client relationships with large organizations, as well as identifying opportunities to deepen those relationships and grow the business.
