Practice Area Profile

BCG’s Energy practice helps companies navigate an increasingly complex business climate. The practice covers the Oil & Gas and Power & Utilities sectors. We also have deep knowledge in Energy transition and Sustainability, Energy Trading and Risk Management and Energy Engineering and Services. Our projects typically apply BCG’s core consulting skills in functional areas such as, digitalization, strategy, organisation or performance improvement, but in the distinctive environment of Energy. We also address projects that touch upon more operational or technical challenges, which we deliver through our expert consultants, occasionally partnering with external specialists. We work with the senior leaders of leading international and national oil companies, service providers, utilities, regulators and financial institutions. The Energy Practice has enjoyed rapid and sustained annual growth over several years, representing about 10% of BCG’s global business volume.Worldwide over 300 Partners, Principals and Project Leaders focus in the Energy space, supported by a large group of Energy experienced and trained Consultants and Analysts, many with pre-BCG industry experience. With businesses facing more pressure than ever to rethink their role in society and improve their impact on people and the planet, BCG is looking for a variety of consultants across tenures and topics to help our clients take on difficult challenges when it comes to climate and sustainability. It’s an exciting opportunity to become our clients’ trusted advisor in producing pioneering sustainable business solutions to optimize societal and business value.

At BCG you will become a pivotal member of our consulting team, working alongside some of the world’s top minds on the forefront of climate and sustainability strategy. You will play a leading role in the growth of our Climate & Sustainability business area and collaborate closely with team members from many backgrounds, advising clients across industries on how best to reduce emissions and reach their sustainability goals.                                        


As our new expert consultant, you’ll play a leading role in the growth of our Climate & Sustainability area. Your primary objective will be to lead and support the execution of assignments related to the topics above by:

  •            Working closely with BCG and client leaders, bringing your deep expertise to the team
  •           Supporting or leading case teams who are in need for an expert, hands-on approach
  •            Driving constructive dialogues with client leaders on how to capitalize - as well as coaching client teams on benefits and usage of specific sustainable energy solutions
  •            Engaging with vendors to assess the costs, value and fit for the client’s requirements

BCG’s Expert Consultants deliver next-level impact for BCG's most complex and ground-breaking client challenges. Expert Consultants focus on developing BCG's thought leadership, commercial capabilities, and intellectual property assets; and their work is essential to our delivery model.

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS AND AREAS OF EXPERTISE

We are looking for talent across the career ladder from consultant to senior manager. Common for your qualifications are typically

  •  Clear domain expertise in one or more of the areas listed below – from either academic or industrial background
  •  Experience with management consulting and advisory is a clear advantage, or alternatively experience from commercial and external facing roles in industry
  • Strong passion for and proven track record in driving impact in high-performance organizations.


ESG Strategy and Corporate Sustainability

Sustainable and impact investing strategy across all sectors, ESG Finance and capital markets, ESG accounting, impact due diligence, ESG integration, net-zero strategy in financial institution or consumer facing industries. Experience with sustainable consumer journeys influencing business and environmental impact.

Carbon accounting and decarbonization

GHG protocol and corporate decarbonization, supplier, and ecosystem decarbonization across sectors from heavy industry to consumer and banking. Scope 3 emissions reduction through supply chain and procurement, net-zero and carbon reduction strategy, demonstrating supply chain technology to reduce footprint

Hydrogen & Power-to-X

Low carbon and Hydrogen/fuel cell/e-fuel strategy within energy, chemicals, metals & mining, engineered processed goods, aerospace & defense, automotive, and agriculture. Experience with hydrogen technology, hydrogen application and markets.

Carbon Technologies and Markets

Market assessment, commercial development and technology maturation of projects and business in carbon capture, utilization and storage across point sources, direct air capture and to a multitude of storage and utilization options. Strategies for carbon markets, carbon trading and offsetting.

Renewables, Electrification and Power Systems

Strategies on wind, solar and frontier renewables generation. Power grid investments for energy transition and policy/regulatory recommendations. Advising on installations of power grid operators to facilitate sustainable transformations. Distributed energy resources (DER), EV vehicles and charging, electrification of industrial processes, onsite electricity generation, corporate renewables procurement.

Circularity, recycling, and waste

Climate and circularity strategies, circular initiatives for different sectors, analysis on recycling processes and recovery efforts. Experience with implementing circular economy practices moving from value chains to value cycles and shaping environmental policies related to state and federal waste and recycling infrastructure.

Biofuels and Bioenergy

Experience in the use of biomass for energy including advising on sustainability issues and carbon emissions, bioenergy technologies, costs, regulations, economic impacts, environmental and life cycle assessment. An understanding of government policies relating to biomass, biofuels and heat markets.
