Practice Area Profile

BCG’s Energy practice helps companies navigate an increasingly complex business climate. The practice covers the Oil & Gas and Power & Utilities sectors. We also have deep knowledge in Energy transition and Sustainability, Energy Trading and Risk Management and Energy Engineering and Services. Our projects typically apply BCG’s core consulting skills in functional areas such as, digitalization, strategy, organisation or performance improvement, but in the distinctive environment of Energy. We also address projects that touch upon more operational or technical challenges, which we deliver through our expert consultants, occasionally partnering with external specialists. We work with the senior leaders of leading international and national oil companies, service providers, utilities, regulators and financial institutions. The Energy Practice has enjoyed rapid and sustained annual growth over several years, representing about 10% of BCG’s global business volume.Worldwide over 300 Partners, Principals and Project Leaders focus in the Energy space, supported by a large group of Energy experienced and trained Consultants and Analysts, many with pre-BCG industry experience. We are well known for our long history of cutting-edge research and thought leadership. Consulting with BCG ensures you work on the biggest issues being tackled by senior management, with a wide variety of experiences across different clients, topics and geographies.

What You'll Do

As a Project Leader you will play a leading role in growing our capabilities in global energy policy analysis. Policies are key enablers and inhibitors on the path of energy transition.  You will build an internal and external network to better evaluate and understand policy trends to augment your existing in-depth expertise in multiple policy realms.  Our clients need your insights to navigate the transformation at the right speed and in the right direction.  This is not only about anticipating change but just as much about driving change in the policy space.  This analysis will be transformed into practical insights for our clients through a variety of media. You will work within the Center for Energy Impact to serve clients, create public facing publications and participate in creating impactful Seat at the Table events.  On a day-to-day basis, this will translate into:


Expert case execution:

  • Manage cases and client-facing project teams globally that are working on your area of expertise with 40%-50% of your capacity for our most valuable energy clients.
  • Act as a key topic expert for our Energy Practice on energy policy issues.
  • You will advise clients on executive level across industries supporting them to improve or transform their policy understanding and achieve excellence in what they do.

Intellectual property & product creation:

  • Create, expand, and own new, regularized policy focused products to manage uncertainty and scenario building to provide regular, unique analysis to clients.
  • Monitor, analyze, and present shifts in the energy policy environment through new insights via public Perspectives and client focused deliverables.
  • Identify value creation opportunities for companies that arise as a result of changes in global, regional and substate energy policy, with a particular emphasis on energy transitions.
  • Strategic thought partnering with the senior members of the Center for Energy Impact (CEI) team for key regular and new deliverables to brief key Managing Directors for C-level discussions.

Seat at the Table (SATT) and networks:

  • Internal: Build relationships across the Energy Practice as well as other related Practices to bring the Best in BCG to clients.
  • External: Build or expand your existing network with policy analysts, think tanks, policymakers and others to allow you to be ahead of policy shifts and their impact on clients.
  • Partner on early thought leadership development for all of CEI’s SATT efforts.
  • Team with BCG’s Fundamentals team and CEI analytical team to provide guidance on developing and maintaining appropriate tools and insights.



Our Expert Consulting Track (ECT)

The Expert Consulting Track (ECT) is vital to BCG’s ability to successfully meet our clients’ demand for deep expertise and advanced technical capabilities. Experts deliver next-level impact for BCG's most complex and cutting-edge client challenges. Experts focus on developing BCG's thought leadership, commercial capabilities, and intellectual property assets; and their work is essential to our delivery model. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team to bring the ‘best of BCG’ to our clients, Experts come from diverse backgrounds, with expertise often gained outside of BCG in industry, academia, or specialized consulting.

What You'll Bring (Experience & Qualifications)

  • At least 5-9+ years of work experience in energy policy in one or more of the following geographies:
    • US
    • China
    • Europe
  • Policy areas:
    • Power and utilities (performance-based regulation and other rate base aspects, transmission issues, renewable energy)
    • Oil and gas (fiscal regimes, permitting, carbon price impacts)
    • Energy transitions
  • Proven experience in managing client facing project teams delivering strong customer experiences and managing stakeholder interactions.
  • Ideally experience in top level policy shop, think tank or advisory/consulting firm advising companies on implications of policy changes and potential changes.
  • Analytical, structured, focused on creating impact.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to develop high level of credibility with senior clients.
  • Team player, open and positive in a group dynamic.
  • Loyal and reliable and with highest ethical standards.
  • Flexible and creative: ability to build empathy within the firm and win the trust of clients.     



Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, DC preferred but we will consider candidates for all of our North American offices.
