Given the technical specialization needed for this role, it will be housed within BCG X, BCG’s cutting-edge group of computer science, statistics, AI and machine learning experts with deep industry expertise. These teams own the full analytics and product development value-chain end to end: framing new business challenges, building fact-bases, designing innovative algorithms, creating scale through designing tools and apps, and training colleagues and clients in new solutions. While housed within BCG X, This role will partner closely with our BCG Tech Capital commercial due diligence consulting teams to drive insights across integrated commercial and product diligences with close alignment with our Principal Investors and Private Equity Practice.

What You'll Do

As a key member of our team, you'll advise clients across the software sector to develop and execute effective product strategies. Engagements will include pre-deal diligence, portfolio review, and value creation engagements. Our associate directors are responsible for leading engagements, translating client needs into project tasks, deliverables, and delivering lasting impact. They manage day-to-day problem solving, lead analytical activities, and serve as key liaisons among consulting team members and our clients.

You will lead teams through a variety of client issues, ranging from diligence to technology strategy assignments. 

Product diligence: BCG Tech Capital engages with our clients to diligence the product strategy of software companies, and the targets themselves - an increasingly critical driver of competitive advantage. This includes assessing product capabilities, road maps, architecture, technical debt, and the overall development organization and processes. This product diligence is also combined with our market-leading commercial due diligence capabilities within our Tech Capital practice, providing clients with a comprehensive view of their target investment from both a market and product strategy perspective. 

Product strategy: By assessing product and R&D portfolio strategy, we help companies identify and build a strong software product and architecture road map. We also identify software development and product value creation opportunities (e.g. assessing organizational capacity, talent, and processes).

Across these engagements, you’ll

  • Develop hypotheses, insights, and key findings
  • Conduct in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, industry experts and customers
  • Lead teams conducting qualitative and quantitative analysis (e.g., spend analysis, feature/functionality benchmarking, competitor analysis, org. and technical capabilities including the core technologies used in build) to support the formulation and validation of strategic recommendations 
  • Add inputs to deal models that both drive valuations and the overall deal model
  • Maintain relationships with clients at appropriate levels 
  • Motivate teams and develop junior team members 
  • Contribute to people initiatives; recruiting, retaining and training current and future staff 

WHO YOU ARE 

We are looking for talented individuals with a real passion for software development and transformative product strategy. Specifically, individuals who can: 

  • Understand and articulate every part of the software development life cycle and the core technologies used to develop these products or platforms
  • Guide non-technical teams and consultants in understanding development best practice, software scalability, and architectural implications 
  • Help mentor and guide junior consultants 
  • Interact directly with private equity and corporate clients 
  • Location of position: Boston, New York, or San Francisco

What You'll Bring (Experience & Qualifications)

  • Experience in software development and working with global and remote agile squads
  • A bachelor's degree and ideally and advanced degree or MBA with outstanding academic performance and at least five years of software-related work experience, preferably:
  • Strategy consulting work experience
  • Degree in computer science or related field plus ideally an advanced degree (MSc, PHD or MBA from a top-ranking institution)
  • Transaction experience, ideally in performing product due diligence and/or strategic value creation assignments
  • Project management expertise with demonstrable experience in delivering successful outcomes and knowledge of structured methodologies
  • Familiarity with industry standards for product management, UI/UX design principles, software architecture, software development life cycle methods and the ability to provide relevant insights based on experience
  • Excellent problem solving, project management, facilitation and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to make detailed assessments of industry, products, markets, competitors and customers to identify risks and opportunities
  • Effective organization and time management skills with ability to work under pressure and adhere to project deadlines
  • Passion for the technology sector
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Fluency in English is required as well as fluency in the local language for some locations
  • Ability to travel based on client and business needs. Expect ~30%

The first year base compensation for this role is:

Lead Software Engineer: $225,400 USD
Associate Director: $252,900 USD

In addition to your base salary, you will also be eligible for an annual discretionary performance bonus and BCG’s Profit Sharing and Retirement Fund (PSRF) contribution. BCG also provides a market leading benefits package described below.
